When I drove up to Old St Mary’s Convent, just 10 minutes out of Blenheim, in the heart of Marlborough’s fabulous wine region, I was taken aback by its splendour.

It’s hard to imagine that only five kilometres out of central Blenheim in Marlborough, Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre, nestled amongst the award-winning wine growing region, is one of the world’s largest collections of WW1 aircraft memorabilia.

I pulled into Blenheim yesterday evening right on sunset – the last part of the journey was just spectacular with the lush grapevines of the Wairau Plain bathed in rich yellow light and the rugged hills behind etched with dark shadows.
