Crossing Cook Strait on the Interislander

InterislanderGetting my car from the South Island to the North Island of New Zealand and back again is easy and stress-free with Interislander.

I drove aboard the Interislander ferry at its Picton terminal in Marlborough, parked my car in the vehicle area and from there made my way to the upper deck to relax and enjoy the three-hour journey (92 km) across Cook Strait to Wellington. Luckily the weather was mild and the sea calm. I was able to chill out, enjoy the stunning views that surrounded me and watch the sunset while sipping on a nice glass of wine.

Interislander has three ships (Kaitaki, Arahura and Aratere) and it offers 11 sailings throughout the day, so there is plenty of choice for travel times. I found the whole experience on the Arahura an enjoyable one because of the friendly staff who went out of their way to make my journey a relaxing one. There are food and beverages available, several TVs, and even a cinema on board playing the latest movie releases, so time goes quickly. For those of you wanting a bit more privacy, then Club Class is the way to go – added benefits of travelling in this private lounge are the refreshments and magazines on offer!

My return trip on the Interislander, from Wellington to Picton, was equally enjoyable. Travelling between the two islands on a ferry is a novelty when you’re used to flying!

The Interislander was the first time I had ever been on a ferry. It was a really enjoyable experience. I was a little nervous driving onto the ferry and then again when leaving but everything worked out.
