Taking time out at Maruia Springs
by Emily Davies - June 9th, 2009. Filed under: Attraction, Eating and Drinking, South Island. On a recent visit from Murchison to Christchurch, travelling through the parklands of the Lewis Pass, we discovered the natural hot pools at Muruia Springs. A natural thermal wonderland, these pools were a welcome saviour on a chilly winter afternoon and the chance to soak in our own private hot pool, gazing out at the snow-capped Southern Alps, was far to good to pass up.
Maruia Springs offers a touch of Japan to those travelling around New Zealand. The complex is set beside the Maruia River, offering a combination of public and private thermal pools. Given the very reasonable price, we opted for a private pool and enjoyed a hot chocolate by the log fire while we waited for the next pool to become available.
After a short while, we were informed our room was ready and given the key and directions to the Tui hut. As we walked down the steps through the complex, we found the atmosphere to be incredibly peaceful and serene. Despite having to wait for a pool, we thought it was still very quiet, only passing two other guests in their dressing gowns and slippers as they made their way between the various public pools.
Our little wooden Tui hut was very pleasant, with its own private toilet and changing area. A separate door opened to reveal the hot pool and shower area, not to mention an incredible view. Slipping in to the hot water, we found that the sulphur smell was hard to ignore; however, aware that the waters have great healing properties and are considered particularly beneficial for detoxifying and softening skin, we were happy to overlook this minor detail!
The allocated time frame of 45 minutes was just perfect, providing plenty of time to soak up the view and totally unwind. What a fabulous way to break up the journey back to Christchurch!
If you are keen to stay on a little longer, there is also accommodation available on site. Imagine a day spent walking out in the great outdoors surrounded by views of snow-capped mountains, followed by a soak in a private hot pool and a massage and then dinner and a few drinks by the log fire later on – sounds divine!
